Welcome to Bookmas day 5! Today, considering the end of the year is fast approaching, I thought it might be fun to discuss some up and coming 2016 book-to-movie adaptations to look forward to! 2016 is going to be a big year for book films, including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (eek!), The Fifth Wave, Pride Prejudice and Zombies, and more.
Shadowhunters by Cassandra Clare
I'm aware that this is not a film, but rather a tv show, but I couldn't leave Shadowhunters out, I really couldn't. After the not-so-great City of Bones film in 2013, we all believed that the Shadowhunter Chronicles would forever remain a preserved story in its book form. But alas! ABC Family picked up the rights to make it into a TV show earlier this year, and on January 12 (after the mid-season premiere of Pretty Little Liars!) the pilot will air.
I'm so excited for this TV show. The cast, with Kat McNamara playing Clary, Dom Sherwood as Jace, Matthew Daddario as Alec and Henry Shrum Jr as Magnus, this looks amazing. In addition to this, a TV show format would suit these books well, beacuse there's just so much content to flesh out. I have high hopes for this series, and I can't wait for January 12.
The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancy
This alien-dystopian series that took the YA world by storm back at the beginning of 2014 will be hitting cinemas around January 15 2016. The book follows a young girl named Cassie, who is living in a world where aliens are attacking the planet and slowing killing off humans by way of five different waves. Cassie has survived four of the waves, but now there is a new rule — trust no one. Cassie encounters the mysterious and enigmatic Evan Walker, who may be her only hope in saving herself and her brother. But can she trust him? Cassie learns to use her skills, wit and resourcefulness to survive in the shell of a world she once lived in.
I'm really excited for The Fifth Wave, especially since I read this book in the week of its release. I didn't love the book (a solid four stars, however), but I'm excited to see it as a film, with Chloe Grace Moretz playing Cassie.
Pride, Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
This parody of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will be a comical, gory film for lovers of horror-comedy. In the book, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield. Can Elizabeth vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry?
I have not yet read this book, but I'm so excited to read it and then go see the film. It looks like it'll be a good laugh, and something to help you understand P&P a bit better if you have to read it for school and just don't want to (hey, no judgement here!). This film is coming out on February 5 next year.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
This book adaptation is going to be a hit. The book starts with a horrific family tragedy which sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.
This film will be amazing, I'm sure, as Time Burton is directing it. I have a feeling he will make sure it is mysterious, atmospheric and spooky. This film is hitting cinemas on March 4.
Allegiant by Veronica Roth
In the final installment in the Divergent franchise, we embark on the beginning of the end. Tris and Four must piece together the fragmented bits of what they have been taught to find the truth. New discoveries render what they know all lies, and so they must continue to fight and rebel to uncover what is real, and to free their society.
This book was not spectacular, and neither was the Insurgent film, so it'll be interesting to see if they will be able to pull it back. Although, if I'm honest, I'm not expecting much from this film. Allegiant will be coming to cinemas near you around March 18.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by JK Rowling
This is something I am very, very looking forward to next year. For those who don't know, this is a Harry Potter spin-off about Newt Scamander, a writer who writes some of the textbooks mentioned in the Harry Potter series. I don't know a lot about how the film will adapt it, but JK Rowling did release the textbook from the series that you can read before.
I'm so pumped for this film, because not only is it another Harry Potter film (sort of), but it also has Eddie Redmayne as Newt, and it's set in New York in the 1920s! We get to see American wizardry! And 1920's wizardry! In the same film! Unfortunately, we've got a while to go before we can bombard the cinemas to go see this, as it isn't being released until November 18 next year. But for now, you can watch the trailer here.
Of course, there will likely be more films released next year, but a lot of them are only rumored at the moment or don't have proper production dates yet. However, as the news comes in, I will make sure to post about it! I'm looking forward to seeing these films in cinemas next year.
